Leonardtown won last night’s boys’ varsity basketball game 57-42 over Northern. The game was tied after the first as each team scored 6 points in the first eight minutes, and Northern outscored Leonardtown in the third quarter 14 to 12. However the second and fourth quarters belonged to Leonardtown as they outscored Northern by 2 points in the 2nd quarter and 12 in the final quarter. In the end Leonardtown was able to win this game because of they fought for and won most of the rebounds on both the offensive and defensive end. Almost every time Leonardtown got a defensive rebound they moved to their offensive end of the floor very quickly and that quick pace allowed them to get several uncontested buckets in transition. Another key factor in the outcome of this game was Leonardtown’s ability to battle on the offensive boards and get the opportunity for second chance points. Their toughness on the offensive boards caused Northern to commit several fouls and a result Leonardtown spent their fair share of time at the foul line and they converted many of their trips to the foul line into points. So in the in the Leonardtown was able to win because there defense was able to contain Northern’s high powered offense that averaging 20 more points a game than Leonardtown and they were able to create and make the most of second chance point opportunities.
